AN eight-year-old Bahraini boy has donated BD200 that he got for his birthday to victims of the tsunami disaster.
Zade Al Borshaid was inspired by an appeal from Radio Bahrain DJ Krazy Kevin, who is shaving his head to raise money for the same cause later this month.
He told his mum, Ursula, that he would like to sponsor him after listening to the station's breakfast show on the way to school.
"He said he wanted to help raise money so I suggested that instead of friends giving him presents for his birthday, they gave him money," Mrs Al Borshaid told the GDN.
"Zade and his brother Nayel, who is six, really wanted to help, but obviously don't have the means to give money to charity."
Zade, a pupil at Abdulrahman Kanoo School, in Salmabad, said he liked the idea because it means the money will go to people who really need it - rather than toys he might play with only once.
"I'm glad we did it," he said.
Meanwhile, Krazy Kevin is well on the way to getting his head shaved after raising around BD2,000 so far.
He is inviting both adults and children to join him in shaving their heads.
However, adults must raise a minimum of BD500 for tsunami victims, while children under 18 have to raise at least BD100 to join in.
"I'm really pleased with the way it's all going," said Krazy Kevin.
"It's amazing what some people are prepared to give and I've even had offers to buy my hair after it's been cut."
The date for the head shaving has not been decided, but donations must be collected by February 15.
Anyone wishing to sponsor Krazy Kevin or join in the head shave can contact him on 39891757, or e-mail [email protected]
Alternatively, donations can be made to a Tsunami Disaster Fund account set up at HSBC Bank.
The account number is 001-077403-002.
