Creativity takes centre stage

ADVERTISING industry professionals and those interested in creative fields are invited to Creative Nights, which will be held from Saturday to Monday.

The event consists of four activities including the 25th Night of the Adeaters, which showcases a cocktail of 500 amusing and unusual television advertisements.

International Advertising Association (IAA) Bahrain Chapter president Khamis Al Muqla said even seasoned professionals would benefit from the expertise on offer at the event.

"It will include presentations by major creative personalities from the Arab world and will highlight some of the greatest achievements in the field," he said.

"The chapter is keen to encourage participation in this event, which is very important to the sector." The five-hour Night of the Adeaters show is screened annually in countries around the world.

Another Creative Nights event is the two-day Creative Debates, which aims to bring together everyone interested in visual communication.

It will cover design client management, advertising in total honesty, design technology, typography and intellectual property, among other things.

Speakers include Bahraini artist Khalid Al Muharraqi, son of famous artist Abdulla Al Muharraqi.

Khalid is a skilled 3D animator and an internationally renowned CG (computer graphics) artist, whose skills have been sought to create 3D visualisations of some of the major architectural developments in Bahrain.

Also speaking is Ontario, Canada-based David Berman, who has over 20 years of experience in graphic design and communications.

As a graphic designer, communications strategist, public speaker, typographer and consultant, his clients include IBM, the International Space Station, the Canadian government, the World Bank and the Aga Khan Foundation.

Also speaking is ARABAD magazine publisher and editor Waleed Azzi and design educator and practitioner Halim Choueiry, who is an assistant professor at the School of the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University, in Qatar.

In addition to design consultancy, Mr Choueiry publishes Comma, a quarterly pan-Arab graphic design magazine.

The Design Cares Travelling Exhibition will be held parallel to the event and opens on the first day. It will display the work of designers who combine their commitment to social responsibility with creativity. The exhibition shows what designers are doing to benefit their respective communities and the world.

Creative Nights will also feature two days of workshops on July 19 and 20, covering design typography, web design, strategy, advertising planning, design technology and other topics. All events are taking place at the Diplomat Radisson SAS expect the screening of the Night of the Adeaters, which takes place at Saar Cinemaplex, and the Design Cares exhibition, which will take place at both venues.
