US soldier dies in grenade attack

BAGHDAD: Violence increased across Iraq after a short lull following the December 15 parliamentary elections, with at least 24 people killed.The dead included a US soldier killed by a grenade in Baghdad.

The violence came as three Iraqi opposition groups threatened to stage another wave of protests and resort to civil disobedience if allegations of fraud are not properly investigated.

The kidnappers of a Jordanian embassy driver in Iraq have threatened to execute him if Amman fails to free a would-be suicide bomber.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko paid an unannounced one-day trip to visit his country's troops. The visit came as his country is pulling out its remaining 867 by December 30.
