BAGHDAD: The governor and police chief of Iraq's southern Diwaniya province were among six people killed in a roadside bomb attack yesterday.
Diwaniya governor Khalil Jalil Hamza and police chief Major General Khaled Hassan were returning to the provincial capital,180km south of Baghdad, when their convoy was hit.
Three bodyguards were killed and three others wounded in the attack. An indefinite curfew has been imposed in the town.
Hamza was a member of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council, the biggest Shi'ite party in Iraq. They had been attending the funeral of a tribal leader in the town of Efaj.
Security forces said the bomb was an "explosively formed penetrator", a deadly form of armour-piercing bomb which US forces accuse Iran of supplying to Iraqi militias.
