Iqbal Day to be marked

A STRING of celebrations are being held in Bahrain to to celebrate the 130th birth anniversary of Pakistan's leader and poet Allama Mohammed Iqbal, which falls tomorrow.

The Pakistan School will celebrate Iqbal Day today, with a gathering at its Jinnah Auditorium on the Isa Town campus.

Bahrain University Civil Engineering Department chief adviser Dr Shamsul Haq Alvi will be the chief guest and Rabia Trading general manager Shakeel Ahmed the guest of honour at the event, which begins at 9am.

The event, featuring recitals and speeches by students,, will be attended by pupils, teachers and parents and other guests. The Pakistan Urdu Literary Society (Halqa-e-Adab) will celebrate the day tomorrow, in association with the Pakistan Embassy.

Chief guest will be embassy head of chancery Muhammed Saleem and guest of honour, Overseas Pakistani Advisory Council member for Bahrain Hamid Nishat.

The event will be held from 5.30pm, at the Bahrain Society of Engineers, Juffair.

Local poets Abdulhaq Arif, Mohammed Ashraf Asim, Mohammed Anwar Bhatti, Anwar Bhatti, Iqbal Tariq and Riaz Shahid will join poets from the Eastern Province to recite highlights from Iqbal's inspirational poetry.

The Pakistan Club Ladies Wing will also celebrate Iqbal Day with a gathering at the club premises, Manama, from 7.30pm tomorrow.

Children from Pakistan School and Pakistan Urdu School will deliver speeches on the life and achievements of the leader. Highlights of his inspirational poetry will also be recited by schoolchildren. Ghazala Hafeez and Samina Ayub are among the organisers. Separate seats for women will be available.
