Arroyo honours 220 travellers

MORE than 220 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) travelling from Bahrain to Manila for Christmas and New Year holidays on Gulf Air flight GF-154 were given a special welcome by Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Ms Arroyo personally greeted each passenger as they came out of the arrival hall at Manila International Airport.

The event was organised by the government to honour the OFWs.

Gulf Air was honoured for the second year in a row by the Philippines government from more than 30 airlines operating to Manila.

"We are delighted that Gulf Air has been chosen by the Philippines president to welcome her countrymen," said Gulf Air board of directors chairman Mahmood Al Kooheji.

"Bahrain is a second home to thousands of Filipinos and, as the national carrier of Bahrain operating regular flights to and from Manila for many years, it is a pride to be the airline of choice for a vast majority of Filipinos."

Special gifts sponsored by Gulf Air were given out to lucky passengers.

William Pangan, a passenger that had checked in with security number 154 (matching the flight number), won a free round-trip ticket from Manila to Jeddah, which was presented to him by the president.

"It is a great moment especially for our Gulf Air Manila station staff members," said Gulf Air Manila Airport manager Khaled Ahmed Arahman, who ensured that all arrangements were in order for the event.

President Arroyo expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in planning the successful event, especially mentioning the participation of Gulf Air and all station staff.

"My sincere thanks goes to Special Representative for Overseas Workers Ambassador Ammabel Aguiluz, Manila International Airport general manager Airport Alfonso Cusi, Labour and Employment Department secretary Arturo Brion, and officials of Tourism and Transportation Department and the airport," said Mr Arahman.
