High-powered team for WEF

MANAMA: The Bahrain delegation to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, will be led by Finance Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa. The delegation will be making a number of high profile speeches during the course of the meeting between Sunday and Tuesday, said Economic Develo-pment Board (EDB) chief executive Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa.

"Outside the global themes that the meeting will be discussing, Sharm El Sheikh provides our delegation with a platform to raise the profile of Bahrain among the Middle East's greatest and most influential political and economic thinkers and key private sector organisations," he said.

"It presents us with an opportunity to continue building our relationships to put Bahrain on the map as a centre of excellence in the Gulf and broaden understanding of the kingdom as a fast growing economy."

Shaikh Ahmed will participate in Al Arabiya Debate on Monday on The Gathering Storm of Inflation in Gulf.

Central Bank of Bahrain Governor Rasheed Al Maraj will talk on Financial Markets Development on Sunday.

Shaikh Mohammed will participate at the showpiece CNBC debate on Sunday to address how the Middle East is translating short-term gains of the oil boom into long-term growth for the entire region.

The delegation also includes: Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Shaikh Ahmed bin Attiyatallah Al Khalifa, Information Minister Jihad Bukamal, Foreign Ministry Acting Under-Secretary for Co-ordination and Follow-up Shaikh Abdul Aziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Finance Ministry Assistant Under-Secretary Yousif Humood, Shura Councillor Ebrahim Bashmy, Mumtalakat chief executive Talal Alzain, Alba chairman Mahmood Al Kooheji, Alba chief executive Ahmed Al Noami, Oasis Capital Bank chief executive Dr Farid Al Mulla, journalist Sawsan AlShaer, EDB board member Adel Maskati, EDB deputy chief executive of projects Ausamah Al Absi, EDB global marketing director Rima Al Kilani and EDB global communications director Rania Al Shirawi.

In addition to the delegation, executives from the following private sector companies will join the EDB in its efforts to promote Bahrain during the WEF meetings: Ithmaar Bank, Investcorp, Alba, Gulf Air and Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company.

These companies will jointly host a series of business meetings throughout the week that highlight Bahrain's competitive advantages and business environment.

"The EDB will focus its agenda on a number of social and economic key issues," said Shaikh Mohammed.

"However, it is Bahrain's role as a financial centre that will drive the EDB agenda as the country has been acknowledged as the world's fastest growing financial centre and so the impetus is on it to lead with new and innovative solutions."
