Her Highness Shaikha Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and Supreme Council for Women chairwoman, yesterday opened the Children's Academy in Janabiya.
Social Development Minister Dr Fatima Al Balooshi and academy founder Shaikha Mona Al Dossari welcomed her.
The academy for children with special needs will also admit students from the region.
Director Greg MacDonald highlighted the importance of integrating children with special need into society by fostering a motivating learning environment.
London-based Alpha Plus director-general Paul Burt spoke on the academy's mission.
Shaikha Sabeeka hailed the academy's standards and advanced approach to cater to children with mild to medium learning difficulties.
She urged concerned government and private parties to cater to this vulnerable segment of society and ensure their social integration.
"Disabilities should not be a cause for people with special needs to suffer social exclusion," she said.
She toured the state-of-the-art facilities.
Shaikha Mona presented her with a gift and students performed a chorus to mark her visit.
