Top players join team ahead of Dubai camp

BAHRAIN'S national soccer team stepped up their preparations yesterday ahead of their overseas training camp in Dubai, which begins tomorrow.

The nationals are gearing up for the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) quadrennial showcase, the AFC Asian Cup, which will be played next month in Doha.

Leading Bahraini professionals Salman Isa, Faouzi Aaish, Hussain Baba and Abdulla Al Marzooqi have joined the team's daily practice sessions after being released by their respective overseas clubs last week.

Another three have yet to join the national side due to club commitments. They are Abdulla Fatai of Ittihad Kalba in the UAE, Jaycee John of Eskisehirspor in Turkey, and Abdulla Ismail Omar of Neuchatel Xamax of Switzerland.

They are expected to be made available in the coming days, and will either be with the team in time for their departure to Dubai tomorrow or meet with the squad at the Emirate.

According to national team administrator Abdulrazzaq Mohammed, the complete details of the Bahrainis' camp - including the number of players who will be travelling - will be known this evening after they are expected to be approved by the BFA.

During their stint in Dubai, Bahrain will play a friendly match against Jordan on December 28. It will be the first of three international tune-up games scheduled in preparation for Doha.

The other two are against North Korea on New Year's Day and against Saudi Arabia on January 4. Both friendlies will be played at home.

The Jordanians, North Koreans and Saudis are also set to compete in the Asian Cup.

Meanwhile, the AFC confirmed yesterday that the Bahrain national team will be arriving at the Qatari capital on January 6.

National team coach Salman Sharida has begun his two-a-day training sessions. Yesterday morning, he worked with the team on their fitness, before getting out onto the pitch in the early evening.

The Bahrain squad has been boosted by the return of Mohammed Salmeen and Mahmood Abdulrahman after a long lay-off due to injury.

The rest of the team members are Ebrahim Al Meshkhas, Hussain Salman, Waleed Al Hayam, Fahad Al Hardan, Abdulla Al Dekheel, Hamad Rakea, Mahmood Al Ojaimi, Dawood Saad, Mahmood Mansoor, Saleh Abdulhameed, Mohammed Al Harban, Sayed Ali Isa, Sayed Jaffer Habib, Ismaeel Abdullateef, Ebrahim Khalil, Rashid Al Hooti, Saad Al Amer, Ahmed Ali and Abdulwahab Al Malood.

The Bahrainis are in group 'C' of the Asian Cup along with South Korea, Australia and India. They open their campaign on January 10 when they face off with the Koreans.
