OFFICIALS have confirmed that a Pakistani crane driver died during the demolition of the Pearl monument last week.
Riaz Ahmed, 43, worked for Nass Contracting and was handling one of four machines when a piece of the monument collapsed on him last Friday.
"His crane cabin was crushed when a part of the structure fell on it," said Pakistan Embassy deputy head of mission Aurangzeb. He added that Mr Ahmed died instantly.
"The company is now making arrangements to repatriate Mr Ahmed's body to Gujranwala, in Pakistan's Punjab province," Mr Aurangzeb said.
Mr Ahmed joined the company in December last year and is survived by his wife. A Nass Contracting official confirmed the incident, but would not comment further.
