Al Khawajah takes part in pro-Iran forum

MANAMA: So-called rights activist Maryam Al Khawajah was listed among the speakers at an annual conference in the UK honouring the founder of Iran as an Islamic republic.

She was named as a guest speaker at the Imam Khomeini Annual Conference in London last Sunday.

The foreign relations head at the now-defunct Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) claimed on Twitter last night that she didn’t know the title of the conference, but said she “sent in an audio participation” from Geneva.

Opposition figures have denied being loyal to Iran after Tehran was accused of interfering in Bahrain’s internal affairs, by trying to influence events here during anti-government protests.

Topics under discussion at Sunday’s event included “roots of revolution”; “strategies and methods of the imam”; “dictatorship, leadership, guardianship”; and “wilayatul faqih”, which is a concept of religious rule practised in Iran that has been criticised for allegedly allowing religious leaders overseas to influence followers in Bahrain.

Iran’s own track record on human rights has come under the spotlight after a crackdown on anti-government protests earlier this year, while The Telegraph newspaper yesterday said British officials confirmed Iran was helping Syria put down demonstrations in operations that had killed an estimated 1,200 since March.
