Endurance race set for flag-off

THE Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef) yesterday completed preparations for the 2012/14 Bahrain Endurance Season, which gets underway tomorrow with a 80km qualifying ride.

Riders from across the kingdom will be taking their horses to Bahrain International Endurance Village in Sakhir this morning for veterinary tests, 24 hours before the season opener.

The first ride of the new season, due to commence at 5pm, is a warm-up event that aims to enable men and women riders of all ages and nationalities to prepare themselves for the big races to be staged later.

The season opener is organised by Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef) and is being held under the patronage of its president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Tomorrow's event will be divided into three stages, with the first and second covering 30 ams each while the third will be over 20 kms.

Today's veterinary examination will be conducted by a team of veterinarians from Bahrain and abroad.

The veterinary team includes Bahrain's Dr Farida Abdulrazzaq, Dr Milo Cabano of the Dominican Republic, laboratory technician Merghani Jelani and Ahmed Dhaif, both of Bahrain.

Tawfeeq Salehi is heading the media and public relations committee while Majeed Ahmed Hassan will be commentating on the race.

Meanwhile, Shaikh Khalid affirmed the readiness of the federation in preparing for the season opener, which he described as a significant step for participants to prepare themselves and their horses to compete in future races.

He praised the continued support of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman, Bahrain Olympic Committee President and Royal Endurance Team captain Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
