Founder of top Indian university remembered

MORE than 150 people last night attended a commemorative meeting marking the 195th birthday of Aligarh Muslim University founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

It was held by the Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association at Ramada Palace Hotel, Gudaibiya. Chief guest was AJM Kooheji Group owner and director Mohammed Abdul Jabbar Al Kooheji. Indian Embassy second secretary Gaurav Gandhi, State Bank of India regional head and West Asia and North Africa chief executive officer Sanjeev Nautiyal, Bahrain Pride Trading Centre Group president Shakeel Ahmed, Ibn Al Haytham School chairman Shakeel Azmi and Indian School Bahrain chairman Abraham John also attended the event, which featured speeches by members followed by dinner.

Mr Khan was a 19th century social reformer, historian and founder of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, India, which was later renamed Aligarh Muslim University.

The alumni association is a representative body of more than 200 former students of the university.
