Court upholds life sentence in rape case

A BAHRAIN court yesterday upheld the life sentence given to an Iranian, who raped his daughter's mentally ill friend.

The 38-year-old had sex with the 18-year-old girl and was convicted of rape by the High Criminal Court in September last year.

He lodged an appeal against the 25-year prison sentence at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court, which upheld the conviction.

The Bahraini girl, who has the mental capacity of an eight-year-old, had visited the defendant's house in Hamad Town several times to play with his seven-year-old daughter, according to court documents.

On January 28 last year, the divorcee, who worked as a security guard, lured the teenager into his bedroom. He then told her to sleep on the floor and place her head on a pillow while he raped her.

He was arrested after the girl told her parents that he asked her to come into his room, took off her clothes and assaulted her.

According to court files, a DNA test found the defendant's semen on the victim's underwear.

The man has a prior criminal record, including 11 cases in connection with drug dealing, theft and molesting an 18-year-old boy.

He was earlier jailed for 10 years for drug dealing, but was later pardoned.

Defence lawyers will file a final appeal against their client's conviction at the Cassation Court - Bahrain's highest court.
