TWO men who worked as gay prostitutes at a massage parlour located above an Islamic institute have been jailed for five years each.
The Chinese men, aged in their 30s, charged BD10 to have sex with male customers at the massage parlour, in Hamad Town.
They were arrested after neighbours complained about the parlour, which is located above an institute that teaches Islam to expats.
Police arranged a sting operation during which the defendants agreed to have sex with a plainclothes officer for cash.
Both men pleaded guilty to prostitution and homosexuality in the Lower Criminal Court, which handed them the maximum sentence.
In his verdict, the judge said he hoped the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others and warned people against homosexuality.
"Homosexuality ruins individuals and nations," the judge said in court documents.
"The defendants were handed the maximum penalty as a deterrent to other violators.
"For individuals, homosexuality causes bad behaviour, a lack of dignity, indecency, fear, pain, suicide and weakens people's belief in Allah.
"For nations, it causes divine punishment, immorality, chaos, splits families and leads to less marriages and births."
Both men will be deported after completing their sentence.
