College honours 200 graduates

MORE than 200 students graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) yesterday.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, who appointed Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi to represent him at the event.

Students who completed their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees were honoured in the presence of government officials, parliamentarians, family members and friends.

Sixty-three graduates received degrees in medicine, 114 in nursing, 16 were conferred with Masters from both nursing and medicine while nine completed their Masters from RCSI Institute of Leadership.

Degrees were presented by RCSI-MUB interim president Professor Sameer Otoom, while National University of Ireland (NUI) degrees were presented by chancellor Dr Maurice Manning.

Royal College of Physicians of Ireland licentiates were honoured by president Professor John Murphy and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland licentiates were presented by RCSI president Professor Patrick Broe.

Two Bahraini students were among the winners of four new inaugural prizes at this year's conferring ceremony.

The James Finucane Prize in Medicine was won by Ameer Adnan Al Arrayed while the Rufaida Al Aslamia Prize in Nursing was won by Zainab Aqeel Maki Mohamed Humood.

Ms Humood was nominated by senior clinical staff for consistently excelling in the delivery of nursing care to patients.

"It is the culmination of many years of hard work, singular focus and utmost dedication," said Professor Otoom.

"These graduates have overcome many difficulties and challenges.

"Therefore, you all are worthy of our admiration and congratulations."

RCSI-MUB is a constituent university of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

"I am confident that those graduating here in RCSI Bahrain will be worthy ambassadors for NUI degrees in future," said Dr Manning, who attended the graduation for the first time.
