US accused of conspiracy

MANAMA: US President Barack Obama has allegedly been implicated in attempts to destabilise Bahrain and Egypt.

His administration supported unrest in both countries in a plot led by the intelligence community, claims retired chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Hugh Shelton.

"America thought Bahrain was easy prey that will serve as key to the collapse of the GCC regime and lead to giant oil companies controlling oil in the Gulf," he said during an interview with Fox News.

Gen Shelton said the plot was foiled by His Majesty King Hamad in 2011 when he agreed to a Saudi-sponsored decision by the GCC to send thousands of troops to Bahrain to help quell a Shi'ite revolt, attributed to Iran.

Gen Shelton, who served under President Bill Clinton and President George W Bush, claimed Egypt also stopped a drive by Obama to destabilise the country earlier this year.

He said Egyptian Defence Minister Abdul Fatah Sisi, a former intelligence chief, detected a US plot to support the Muslim Brotherhood and led a preventative coup that overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Mursi.
