Top bowling clash offers rich prizes

THE 12th Bahrain International and the Eighth PBA/WTBA Bowling Championship will commence on Sunday at the Ozone Bowling Centre at Sitra Mall.

The event, which concludes on March 7, is being held under the patronage of general secretary of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa.

The organising committee, headed by president of Bahrain Bowling Association Abdulla Al Doseri and vice president and tournament director Abdulla Raee, have finalised all technical issues related to this event which has been recognised by the World Ten Bowling Association (WTBA) and become one of the stop overs of Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) tour after fulfilling all the requirements as far as the format and prizes are concerned.


The president of WTBA Kevin Dornberger will be arriving in Bahrain to attend this championship as guest of honour.

This championship has also become a ranking tour for Asian Zone, Arab Federation, GCC Zone and Bahrain too. All participants will be awarded ranking points according to their positions.

The organising committee have allocated dates from Sunday to March 1 for Bahraini and Bahrain-based bowlers to qualifying with less entry fee. So far 97 bowlers have registered from 17 different nationalities. Out of this total, 35 are Bahraini and 13 Americans. The defending champion Mika Koivuniemi of Finland has already registered to defend his title.

The first to score the perfect game 300 will receive $1,000.

The organising committee have thanked Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa for his patronage and Bapco, GPIC, Banagas and Elite Crystal Hotel for their generous sponsorship. Prizes: 1 $25,000, 2 $12,500, 3 $8,000, 4 $6,000, 5 $5,000, 6 $3,500, 7 $3,000, 8 $2,800, 9 $2,700, 10 $2,600, 11 $2,500, 12 $2,250, 13 to 18 $2,000, 19 to 24 $1,500 and 25 to 30 $1,200.
