BAHRAIN triathlon team, led by Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, has bagged the New York Ironman Championship title.
The team, which consisted of 16 players, headed by SCYS first deputy chairman and Bahrain Athletic Association president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, competed against 2300 international triathletes, representing 30 teams.
Team captain Shaikh Nasser and Shaikh Khalid dedicated the victory to His Majesty King Hamad.
Shaikh Nasser praised His Majesty for his continuous support, which resulted in winning various titles for the kingdom in international sports arenas.
He also appreciated the collective efforts made by Bahraini triathletes in the three stages of the championship.
Despite the rough race course, the team captain achieved a new personal record by finishing the race within 04:42:10 hours.
Additionally, Shaikh Nasser said that winning the championship adds to Bahrain's previous triathlon achievements and also promotes for the first Bahrain International Triathlon Championship, which takes place on December 4.
On his part, Shaikh Khalid noted that winning the championship at the team's fifth international participation is a great achievement.
Shaikh Khalid said that the team's accomplishment in the United States is a result of hard training and preparations, affirming that the latest victory will help improve the team's performance.
The championship, which took place in Syracuse, New York, consisted of three competitions - swimming for 1.9 kilometres, cycling for 90km and a 21km running race.
